Time Kills All Deals.

Recently I have been dealing a lot with the major issue of over analysis in the job search. The inability to make quick, positive and decisive decisions is one of the biggest reasons I have experienced for failure in a job search. When I was working in recruitment we had a saying that ‘time kills all deals’ often used to clarify to a new recruiter how important it was to maintian momentum it is equally important for job seekers. A successful job search is a process of building positive relationships and momentum, these two factors reinforce each other and by

Reassess your Market Value Through the Power of Networking

With any candidate that I work with a very important part of the coaching process is to discuss market value, and through it self worth. I find a high percentage of candidates have a tendency to overestimate the skills, knowledge and professionalism of their peers and other companies; whilst simultaneously underestimating their own experience. One candidate I am working with in particular brought this home to me recently, we’ll call her Sally. Sally is a bright professional person with many years of experience in small businesses. Looking through her resume I can see that she has made some solid if

Running on Inspiration from Haruki Murakami

Following on from my post yesterday I have just finished reading a book which gives great insight into using the activities and experiences of everyday life to give you inspiration and in the work place. The book is ‘What I Talk About When I Talk About Running’ by Haruki Murakami. Murakami is famous for his novels and the depth of the tales that he tells. This is his first and only attempt at an autobiographical novel, and is framed by his love for running. The aspect which interests me in the book, and which I alluded to above is Murakami’s

Getting Educated … for a New Career.

Sometimes out of blue something or somebody comes along with a message which resonates with the very deepest part of your belief system, that is what happened for me this weekend. I was introduced a video of Ken Robinson, a British Education Guru who has had extremely successful speeches at TED in 2006 and 2010. The video that I was sent is below and is titled ‘Changing Education Paradigms’, it’s a speech that Robinson conducted which has been animated for visual effect as part of the RSA Animate series (which has a lot of other great stuff). The video explores

Learning the language of Job Descriptions

Over the last two weeks I took some time away, traveling and speaking to people informally about the issues they have with their careers and job searches. I was surprised at how many people brought up job descriptions as an issue in their search. Whether understanding the lingo of job descriptions posted online by recruiters or finding that the requirements posted were different from those that the job actually needed and just ended up in rejection, it seems there are frequently issues with the information out there. While there is the chance that through a process of interviewing, essentially just

His skills and abilities are amongst the best in his field, he knows this for sure. Every recruiter he meets with gives him some job descriptions and talks to him about jobs, he knows that there are jobs out there for him. But he’s frustrated. The problem is that he hasn’t applied to any of these positions yet. Why? Because he just can’t seem to find a recruiter worth his salt. When he meets with them he
